Väzba there is, there are sa používa pri opise, že niekde niečo je. Niečo, o čom druhý nevie, je to preňho nová informácia. Napríklad: „Čo je na stole?“ – neviem, čo tam je, preto sa na to pýtam. V odpovedi bude, že je tam jablko – pre mňa nová informácia. Teda, použijem v odpovedi väzbu there is.

S vlastnými podstatnými menami sa nezvykne používať. Niekedy sa ale môže táto väzba vyskytnúť aj s určitými podstatnými menami (čiže the + podstatné meno alebo my + podstatné meno, prípadne menami ľudí.

Ak máme väzbu there is/are spojenú s výrazom a lot of/lots of riadime sa podstatným menom. Ak je nepočítateľné, použijeme there is, ak je počítateľné (a teda je v množnom čísle), použijeme there are.

There were a lot of people at the party.
There is a lot of milk in the coffee.

Samozrejme, v hovorenom prejave to takto striktne nerozlišujeme a použiť môžeme bežne skrátený výraz there’s aj s množným číslom. Ide o veľmi neformálny spôsob. Z gramatického hľadiska sa to považuje za chybu.
